About Bangor Theological Seminary
Bangor Theological Seminary was a private nonprofit graduate-level theological institution historically located in Bangor, Maine. One of the oldest seminaries in the United States, it offered graduate theological education with a focus on ministry preparation within the Congregationalist and United Church of Christ traditions. The seminary ceased operations and closed in 2013, and it is no longer an active degree-granting institution.
During its operational years, Bangor Theological Seminary offered graduate programs including the Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religion, and related theological degrees. The institution served students preparing for ordained ministry and lay leadership roles within Protestant Christian churches.
Bangor is located in Penobscot County in central Maine and serves as a regional hub for commerce and services in the state. The seminary's closure marked the end of a lengthy tradition of theological education in northern New England, though its legacy continues through alumni serving in ministry across the region and beyond.
