About This Program
Above and Beyond Heating and Air Conditioning LLC (PHCC), located in Iowa City, IA, sponsors this employer-sponsored, registered, non-union HVAC Technician apprenticeship in partnership with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association. Apprentices earn wages throughout training while developing trade skills on real jobs in the Iowa City area.
This four-year program incorporates 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices learn to install, service, and diagnose heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. PHCC-aligned classroom instruction covers refrigeration theory, electrical systems, air distribution, load calculations, system controls, troubleshooting, and EPA refrigerant handling requirements.
Graduates are prepared to work as journey-level HVAC technicians. The PHCC affiliation brings industry-recognized training standards to the program, and Iowa City's university community and residential growth provide a consistent base of HVAC service work for apprentices throughout their training.
