Millwright at Eastern Millwright Regional Council

The Eastern Millwright Regional Council sponsors this employer-based Millwright apprenticeship program in Charles City, VA. This non-union program trains apprentices in the full range of millwright skills required to install, maintain, and repair industrial machinery in manufacturing and processing facilities across the region. Apprentices are paid while they learn throughout the entire four-year program.

The program includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices work on real job sites alongside experienced millwrights, building skills in precision machinery alignment, rigging and hoisting, hydraulic and pneumatic system maintenance, and the use of specialized trade tools. Technical instruction covers blueprint reading, mechanical systems theory, industrial safety, and applied mathematics.

Upon completing all program requirements, apprentices advance to journey-level millwright status. Charles City and the surrounding Virginia industrial corridor offer employment opportunities in manufacturing, paper production, and chemical processing — industries that rely heavily on skilled millwrights for ongoing operations and maintenance.
