About This Program

The Galveston Iron Workers JATC sponsors a registered union ironworker apprenticeship based in Houston, TX. Operating through a Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, the program trains apprentices for skilled careers in ironwork within one of the nation's largest and most active construction and industrial markets. All apprentices receive pay from the start of training.

The four-year apprenticeship combines 6,000 hours of on-the-job training with 576 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices gain hands-on experience in structural steel erection, reinforcing bar placement, rigging and signaling, welding, and construction equipment operations — working alongside journeymen on real projects in the Houston and Gulf Coast region. Classroom instruction covers OSHA safety requirements, blueprint reading, rigging load calculations, and ironworking fundamentals.

Graduates earn journeyman ironworker credentials and are well-positioned for long-term employment on petrochemical, commercial, and infrastructure construction projects throughout the Texas Gulf Coast. Union membership through the Galveston Iron Workers JATC provides negotiated wages, benefits, and access to an extensive network of construction opportunities in one of the country's busiest regional markets.
