About This Program
The International Union of Operating Engineers sponsors this union (JATC) apprenticeship for heavy equipment operators in Pittsburgh, PA. Backed by the IUOE's national resources and standards, this program is designed to develop skilled, safety-conscious operators capable of working across Pittsburgh's diverse construction landscape including commercial buildings, bridges, tunnels, and infrastructure projects. Apprentices earn wages from day one and progress through a structured pay scale as they advance.
The program runs for four years and requires 6,000 hours of on-the-job training alongside 432 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices gain field experience operating cranes, excavators, pile drivers, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment common to western Pennsylvania construction environments. Technical classroom instruction covers hydraulics, rigging safety, equipment inspection, load calculations, and OSHA safety regulations.
Graduates earn journeyman Operating Engineer credentials recognized by the IUOE and signatory contractors throughout the region and across the country. Union membership provides access to collectively bargained wages, benefits packages, and pension contributions that support a financially secure, long-term career in the heavy construction industry.
