About This Program

IPSA/Salt Lake Community College Lineman Technology in Sandy, UT sponsors this non-union Lineman Apprenticeship, combining the resources of an industry professional standards association with the academic infrastructure of Salt Lake Community College. Apprentices are paid throughout the program, gaining both field experience and formal technical education in a coordinated setting.

The apprenticeship runs four years and includes 7,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices develop skills in installing and maintaining overhead and underground electric distribution systems, operating aerial lifts and utility vehicles, safely working near energized equipment, and adhering to OSHA and utility industry safety requirements. The Lineman Technology curriculum at SLCC provides structured classroom instruction in electrical theory, distribution systems, line hardware, and construction methods.

Graduates earn journey-level lineman credentials, qualifying them to work with electric utilities, power cooperatives, and electrical contractors across Utah and the Intermountain West. The combination of community college instruction and hands-on field training makes this a well-rounded program for those entering the utility line trade.
