About This Program
Operating Engineers Local 137 Apprenticeship and Skills sponsors this apprenticeship for heavy equipment operators in Montrose, NY. Though not affiliated as a JATC program, Local 137 draws on its union roots to deliver structured training in partnership with employers throughout the Hudson Valley and surrounding region. Apprentices are paid throughout the program, gaining real income and real skills simultaneously.
The program runs four years and includes 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and 432 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices work alongside experienced operators learning to run cranes, excavators, bulldozers, and other construction equipment on active project sites. Classroom instruction addresses equipment safety, preventive maintenance, rigging principles, and relevant OSHA safety standards for heavy construction environments.
Upon completing all training requirements, graduates are credentialed as journeyman Operating Engineers prepared to work on commercial, residential, and civil construction projects throughout New York State.
