About This Program

The Oregon & SW Washington Painters JATC Painter Apprenticeship is a registered union program located in Portland, OR, serving apprentices across Oregon and southwestern Washington. As a Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee program, it is jointly managed by labor and management, providing strong training standards, union wages, and comprehensive benefits for every apprentice.

This 3-year apprenticeship includes 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and 432 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices develop hands-on skills in surface preparation, paint and coating application, spray equipment use, specialty finishes, and finish quality control across commercial, residential, and industrial projects. Classroom instruction addresses trade safety, materials science, blueprint reading, estimating basics, and applicable labor regulations.

Graduates earn journey-level status as union painters prepared to work on major projects throughout the Portland metro area and surrounding region. Union membership includes negotiated pay scales, health coverage, and retirement benefits, and apprentices are paid throughout their entire 3-year training period — making this an excellent choice for building a skilled trade career in the Pacific Northwest.
