About This Program
The TC Heat & Frost Insulators Joint Apprenticeship Committee offers a union Insulator apprenticeship program based in St. Paul, MN. Administered as a JATC program, training standards are jointly set by union representatives and participating contractors, ensuring apprentices receive consistent, industry-recognized preparation. Apprentices are compensated throughout their training period.
The program spans four years and includes 8,000 hours of hands-on, on-the-job training paired with 576 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices develop skills in applying insulation to pipes, HVAC systems, boilers, and industrial equipment, as well as working with a variety of insulation materials including fiberglass, foam, and calcium silicate. Classroom instruction covers energy conservation, safety standards, applicable codes, and trade calculations.
Completing this apprenticeship leads to journey-level insulator status within the union. This credential is recognized by union contractors throughout the region, opening doors to stable employment in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects across Minnesota.
