California requires auto repair shops to register as an Automotive Repair Dealer (ARD) with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), a division of the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Individual mechanics are not required to hold a personal state license, but smog check technicians and inspectors must obtain a separate license from BAR.
