About This Program
George Mason University's Maintenance Department in Fairfax, VA sponsors this registered non-union Mason apprenticeship. Unique among masonry programs, this apprenticeship is based within a university facilities operation, giving apprentices experience maintaining and constructing masonry structures on an active campus environment. Apprentices are paid throughout the program while gaining hands-on trade skills.
The three-year program includes 6,000 hours of on-the-job training alongside 432 hours of related technical instruction. Apprentices work on brick, block, and stone repair and construction; mortar mixing and repointing; and safe use of masonry tools and equipment in both interior and exterior settings. Technical instruction covers blueprint reading, masonry materials, construction math, and safety standards.
Completing the program leads to journey-level mason credentials, equipping graduates for careers in institutional facilities maintenance, commercial construction, or independent contracting. Experience gained in a university facilities setting provides a well-rounded foundation applicable across a wide range of masonry work environments in the Virginia and greater D.C. area.
